Laboratories that are part of medical facilities, faculties and other types of organizations, spend a lot of energy and create a lot of waste. That’s why it is important to come up with a plan that will improve the sustainability of these facilities. People who are working in these labs are advised to find a way to reduce waste and to reuse items that can be reused. But, what happens to the laboratory equipment and devices that can’t be used again? Where are they going?
Basically, there are three options for lab waste and only one of them is good for the environment. Many laboratories decide to keep the damaged, broken or obsolete laboratory equipment they have in warehouses and other places. They store these items hoping that they can use some parts of it in case some of their new devices or pieces of equipment get broken. But, this approach is wrong because if these devices are left like that they can start causing pollution. In addition, they will just take valuable space. On the other hand, the second option – sending the lab waste to landfills – is even worse. Most of this waste can be quite dangerous. Obviously, it’s perfectly safe to use laboratory equipment of any kind, but once this equipment is left outside and unattended, the toxic materials found in it will slowly start spreading around in the soil, water, and air. The consequences for the environment can be devastating. This leads us to the third, most logical and most eco-friendly solution – recycling.
In the recent period, there are many people who are interested in laboratory recycling and the impact it has on our environment. We have already mentioned what could happen if laboratory waste and unwanted equipment is left in landfills and recycling is here to prevent this from happening. When laboratory managers choose to use recycling services, they are using a service that leaves almost no pollution in the atmosphere. Recycling is a process that doesn’t hurt the environment. If every laboratory uses recycling companies, the size of landfills will be reduced and this space could be used for something more productive. But, this is not the only way in which recycling affects our environment in a positive way.
We should not forget that recycling is a process in which the valuable materials found in the waste are separated. Many laboratory devices and equipment contain metals like gold, silver, copper, brass etc. These materials can be extracted relatively easy and they can be reused in new products. This means that there is no need for extracting resources and using energy to prepare them for use. Laboratory recycling preserves the planet’s resources and it also speeds up the process of production of new products.
Proper laboratory recycling keeps our planet safe from pollution. There are many companies offering services like this, but lab managements should look for companies that have certifications and licenses to work in this field.
